How Olaf's K9 Training School was born.
Olaf's K9 Training School is named after the dog who made it all happen. Olaf is the GSD in the picture and has been a vertical learning curve from the day he came into our lives.
Olaf is quite a character and has not been the easiest of dogs to handle but with lots of guidance from the right people he is currently a well behaved dog. Olaf will always be a little on the unpredictable side and you always have to be one step ahead of the game with him. Olaf would not be Olaf if he was consistantly a good boy, he just has to try it on and although the majority of times he is unsuccesfull in his quest for mishief, sometimes he does actually succeed, he like's to catch you unaware. Nowadays you can tell what kind of mood he is in because the give-away sign is the he has a real mischievious glint in his eye, so you smile and remember that today you need to be on your toes.
Olaf was not one of those dogs that read the training manual, in fact he looked at it and ripped it into small pieces. The books said this and Olaf well ............. he did anything but what the book said. We did go to training classes, quite a few in fact, some we got thrown out off, some we just did not seem to get any help and some well, some were not very nice either. Apparently Olaf was the untrainable dog.
With lots of thanks to a very special lady (she knows who she is) I now have what would pass as a well trained dog. This lady put the sparkle back in my lads eye and with her help and guidance, the untrainable dog gained his Kennel Club Good Citizen Gold Award. We have even dabbled in Competion Obedience and he has been placed in low level classes but it is really not for Olaf. He might not be the best competion dog BUT he is now a wonderful pet dog and he can certainly give some of those competion dogs a good run for their money in how to be a well behaved, well mannered dog, which is the most important thing.
Whilst owning such a dog, I can honestly say that I have never learnt so much in my entire life. It has not been an easy journey with him but looking back on the last few years it is the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. When you turn around one day and see all the hard work you have put in working, it is an extremely satisfying experience. It brings a smile to my face just looking at the dog he is now compared to the dog he was then.
Hence why Olaf's K9 Training School was born, I want to help other people with dogs that are not following the "man's best friend" manual. I would like to teach dog owners how to have a rewarding relationship with their dogs through training.
Dog Training is not just about dogs being naughty, it is about understanding & communicating with your dog so the bond between you and your dog increases. It is also about learning to have fun with your dog.
I have alot to thank Olaf for, if he was not such a difficult dog, Olaf's K9 Training School would not be here. I would not have made the most fantastic friends that I currently have and I certainly would not have travelled as much as I have in my quest to learn more and I have developed a thirst to keep learning. Olaf did not just change my life, he turned it upside down and made it better because I thoroughly enjoy what I do.
Everything in life does happen for a reason ................. Olaf and I are living proof of that!!!!
